The Aetna Open Access plan is a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan that gives members more freedom. Members can visit any in-network provider, like a primary care physician (PCP) or specialist, for covered services without a referral.
An HMO is a kind of health insurance that has a list of providers, such as doctors, medical groups, hospitals, and labs. You must get all of your health care from the providers on this list. This list is called a network. Usually you have a main doctor, who is part of a medical group that has a contract with the HMO.
The HMO-EPO plan only provides in-network coverage for services, except for urgent and emergent care which would be covered the same out-of-network as it would in-network. The PPO plan offers both in-network and out-of-network coverage.
With the Aetna Open Choice PPO plan, members can visit any provider, in network or out, without a referral. But when they stay in network, well handle the claims and offer lower, contracted rates. So they save.
Open access plans combine similar benefits of an HMO with the same type of coverage benefits as a traditional health plan.
