The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) tax is a payroll tax imposed on employers and self-employed individuals who operate within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) in New York State. Like other payroll taxes, youll incur fines and penalties if you dont pay the MTA tax.
The metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax (MCTMT) is imposed on certain employers and self-employed individuals engaging in business within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD). This department administers the tax for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The MCTD is divided into two zones: Zone 1 includes the counties of New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, and Richmond (Staten Island). Zone 2 includes the counties of Rockland, Nassau, Suffolk, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester.
Tax rate: 0.34% (. 0034) of net earnings from self-employment allocated to the MCTD during the tax year. Effective date: Tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2009. For 2009, the tax liability is calculated on 10/12 of your net earnings from self-employment allocated to the MCTD.
The state of New York recently passed budget bill 4008 into law, which modified the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax effective July 1, 2023. It is still a payroll expense tax that is applicable to certain employers within the state of New York.
