Will I have to pay vehicle property tax if I am active duty military? Active duty non-resident military personnel may be exempt from North Carolina motor vehicle property tax. To qualify for an exemption, you must present a copy of your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) to the county tax office.
Application for exemption must be made annually. What is not exempt from taxes? Vehicle property taxes are not exempted if the Active Duty military personnels primary residence (home state of record) is located in South Carolina. Vehicle fees are not exempted (including DMV registration fees and County road fees).
The Office of Foreign Missions (OFM) enforces the exemption of eligible foreign missions and their members from payment of any taxes when purchasing, leasing, registering or titling a vehicle.
