ISO 19840 specifies the required number of readings depending on the size of the area to be measured in each Inspection area. There are four key requirements for acceptance of an inspection area. The average of all the individual dry-film thicknesses must be equal to or greater than the NDFT.
The ISO 12944 standard helps ensure proper corrosion protection and includes important information on paint technology, criteria for paint selection and surface preparation requirements.
Individual dry-film thicknesses between 80% of the NDFT and the actual NDFT are acceptable provided that the number of these measurements is less than 20% of the total number individual measurements taken.
The 80-20 rule means no more than 20% of readings can be below the minimum specified DFT, and the minimum DFT cannot be below 80% of what is specified. Factors are provided to adjust measurements for surface roughness or DFT below 30 microns.
Key differences include: SSPC PA2 recommends specifying minimum and maximum thickness ranges while ISO 19840 recommends a single nominal dry film thickness value. SSPC PA2 allows gauge readings to vary up to 20% from specified values, while ISO 19840 requires 80% minimum of nominal.
