Eligibility: Child benefits in Canada, such as the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), are typically available to residents of Canada. If you move outside the country, your eligibility may change. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires recipients to inform them of any changes in residency status.
The CRA will process all applications and send out your first payment within eight weeks of submitting online forms. If you apply via mail, expect your first payment within 11 weeks. If your total CCB for the tax year is less than $240, the CRA will issue payment in one lump sum with the July payment.
The tax charge was equal to 1 per cent of the total Child Benefit received for every 100 earned over 50,000. This meant that someones Child Benefit payment was withdrawn completely when their income docHubed 60,000. The HICBC threshold was increased to 60,000 from 6 April 2024, while the taper was halved.
These amounts start being reduced when the adjusted family net income (AFNI) is over $37,487. The reduction is calculated as follows: For families with 1 eligible child: the reduction is 7% of the amount of AFNI greater than $37,487 up to $81,222.
This measure increases the adjusted net income threshold for the High Income Child Benefit Charge ( HICBC ) from 50,000 to 60,000, from 6 April 2024. For individuals with income above 80,000, the amount of the tax charge will equal the amount of the Child Benefit payment.
