The Register of Italians living abroad (A.I.R.E.) was established by Law No. 470 of October 27, 1988 and contains the data of Italian citizens living abroad for a period of over twelve months. It is managed by the Municipalities on the basis of data and information from the Consular Representations abroad.
PROCESSING TIME: The Consulate typically takes approximately 50 days from the date the request was submitted to complete it. IMPORTANT: The status in the Fast It portal only regards the status of the application at the CONSULATE. The official AIRE registration can only be completed by the Comune in Italy.
A recent law (Law No. 213 Art. 1 paragraph 242, December 23, 2023) mandates that failure to register with AIRE will result in a fine of up to 1,000 for each year, for a maximum of five years. This new provision aims to ensure compliance and maintain accurate records of Italian citizens abroad.

AIRE is the acronym for Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti allEstero, meaning the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad. Registration is mandatory for all Italian citizens who transfer their residency abroad for a period of at least 12 months.
The following people shall register with A.I.R.E: citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods of over 12 months; those who already live abroad, either because they were born abroad or because they subsequently acquired Italian citizenship for any reason.
It is emphasized that Law No. 213, Article 1, paragraph 242 of December 30, 2023, has introduced a maximum penalty of 1,000.00 for each year of failure to register with the A.I.R.E., for a maximum of 5 years, for all Italian citizens residing abroad.
