To teach in an English state school, you must apply for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). With a teaching qualification from a university in Northern Ireland, you may be able to gain QTS without any further training or assessment. For more information, visit the National College for Teaching Leadership.
A Red C poll commissioned by the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) this week revealed there are unfilled teaching vacancies in almost half of second-level schools. It has led to 80% of principals and deputy principals having to employ unqualified staff.
With schools finding Irish the toughest subject to recruit for, no teachers applied for jobs at almost 80% of 131 second-level schools surveyed by the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI). Schools are also finding it the most difficult to recruit teachers for Home Economics, French, Maths and Spanish.
Fully qualified teachers who have qualified outside of the Republic of Ireland are eligible to apply for registration with the Teaching Council.
The Teaching Council considers applications from teachers who qualified outside Ireland if they are fully qualified in their home country. Registration in Ireland, where granted, may be subject to conditions and you may need to do some additional training.

Post-primary teachers do not need to have a qualification in the Irish language unless they are employed by a Gaeltacht school or a school where Irish is the medium of instruction. Qualification is usually achieved by gaining a primary degree from a recognised third-level institution.
