In most states, there are over 100 items to be checked on the tractor-trailer. Passing the test requires each student to study and memorize the items tested. Drivers need to be able to point out a part, and describe what condition it is in.
The seven-step inspection process detailed in the states CDL manual is one common technique, which involves: A vehicle overview. Engine compartment. Engine startup and in-cab checks. Lights. Walkaround. Turn signals. LAB PS brake test.
Step 6: Check Signal Lights Turn off all lights. Turn on stop lights (apply trailer hand brake or have a helper put on the brake pedal). Turn on left turn signal lights.
Best way I found is to go out every day and do a full pre trip on the truck. Start with the cab, once youve got that down move to lights and reflectors, then under the hood, and so on. Do this every day until you dont need the sheet and have it most of the way memorized.

Take your pretrip study sheet, and make each section (lights, fuel/door area, catwalk, etc) into flash cards. Memorize everything youre supposed to say. Kind of use it like a script. I got 100% on my pretrip exam doing it this way.
For the Class B CDL Test, candidates must take the General Knowledge test (which are required for all CDL licenses) plus any additional endorsement tests needed for the Class B CDL License. The CDL candidate must also complete an actual driving test in the vehicle that falls into the Class B weight class.
