A KWL table, or KWL chart, is a graphical organizer designed to help in learning. The letters KWL are an acronym, for what students, in the course of a lesson, already know, want to know, and ultimately learn.
K-W-L (Know-Want to know- Learn) technique is a chart which consists of three columns: know, want to know and learned. The first column is Know. In this column, the students write down about what they have known about the topic that will be discussed by the writer in the text. The second column is Want to know.
A worksheet can be both formative and summative. If used to check understanding after a lesson, its formative. If used as part of a final project, it can contribute to a summative assessment.
In addition to these informal diagnostic assessments, I also use KWL charts frequently. These are diagnostic, formative, and summative because they ask students to identify what they know (K), what they want to know (W), and what they learned (L) during a particular lesson.
A Guide to Types of Assessment: Diagnostic, Formative, Interim, and Summative. Assessments come in many shapes and sizes. For those who are new to assessment or just starting out, the terms can be hard to sort out or simply unfamiliar.
