PAST: The Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) is a widely used informal diagnostic tool that helps you evaluate 14 separate aspects of phonological awareness, including phoneme-level phonological awareness.
The PAST is best used with students as part of a formal reading assessment to determine a student's level of phonological awareness (i.e., syllable, onset-rime, or phoneme) and their degree of proficiency (i.e., multisensory, knowledge or automatic).
The Total Scores First, the student receives a score that indicates how many were correct and how many were automatic at the syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme levels. Second, the other side gives the highest level passed. Remember that a level is passed as correct if at least 4 out of 5 at that level are correct.

Assessment in phonological awareness serves essentially two purposes: to initially identify students who appear to be at risk for difficulty in acquiring beginning reading skills and to regularly monitor the progress of students who are receiving instruction in phonological awareness.

First Assessment \u2013 Phonological Awareness Skills Test (PAST) The PAST test is comprehensive, evaluating 14 aspects of the development of Phonological Awareness. It was designed as an informal, individual assessment, with a total of 84 words on the test.
The PAST includes substitution items while Elision does not, and the Elision subtest has items that involve deleting phonemes from within two syllable words (e.g., saying tiger without /g/ = tire) while the PAST does not.
A unique feature of the PAST is the examiner provides corrective feedback for every incorrect item. Feedback on the PAST is based on the assumption that a student is not going to develop phonological awareness skills in the 6-8 minutes it takes to administer this test. Give feedback for every incorrect response.
