They are found throughout the lake, usually near bottom in 30'-150' of water. In Flathead Lake, look for whitefish in 20'-60' of water over sand and gravel bars and off points. They can be caught in 100'-150' of water but it's trickier. In general, you'll need to be anchored or drifting very slowly.

Flathead Reservation Boundary The south half of Flathead Lake is within the Flathead Indian Reservation, and a Flathead Reservation Combined Use/ Fishing Permit or a Reservation Use Permit with a bird- hunting stamp are required when fishing or waterfowl hunting on the south half of Flathead Lake.
The Flathead Indian Reservation is located north of I-90 between Missoula and Kalispell. Fertile valleys and towering mountain peaks surround the 1.2 million acres of the reservation. The reservation is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes.
A valid fishing license is required for all types of fishing on state waters for anyone 12 or older. A fishing license allows a person to fish for and possess any fish or aquatic invertebrate authorized by the state's fishing regulations. It is nontransferable and nonrefundable.
The Flathead Indian Reservation encompasses more than 400 miles of fishing streams and 70,000 acres of lakes. Fishing is open on lakes, ponds, potholes, and reservoirs all year. The Flathead and Jocko Rivers are also open to fishing the entire year, with additional restrictions (see current regulations).
THE PEOPLE. The Flathead Indian Reservation is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes. The tribes are a combination of the Salish, the Pend d'Oreille and the Kootenai. Of the approximately 7,753 enrolled tribal members, about 5,000 live on or near the reservation.
