Phonological Awareness Assessment Recognizing a word in a sentence shows the ability to segment a sentence. Recognizing a rhyme shows the ability to identify words that have the same ending sounds. Recognizing a syllable shows the ability to separate or blend words the way that they are pronounced.
First Assessment Phonological Awareness Skills Test (PAST) The PAST test is comprehensive, evaluating 14 aspects of the development of Phonological Awareness. It was designed as an informal, individual assessment, with a total of 84 words on the test.
The Total Scores First, the student receives a score that indicates how many were correct and how many were automatic at the syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme levels. Second, the other side gives the highest level passed. Remember that a level is passed as correct if at least 4 out of 5 at that level are correct.
A unique feature of the PAST is that the examiner provides corrective feedback for every incorrect item. Feedback on the PAST is based on the assumption that a student is not going to develop phonological awareness skills in the 68 minutes it takes to administer this test. Give feedback for every incorrect response.
The PAST is best used with students as part of a formal reading assessment to determine a students level of phonological awareness (i.e., syllable, onset-rime, or phoneme) and their degree of proficiency (i.e., multisensory, knowledge or automatic).
