To stop contributing to the CPP, you must have received CPP benefits and you must have received a T4A (P) slip. An election filed using Form CPT30 applies to all income from pensionable earnings, including self-employment earnings.
After each year you pay into the post-retirement benefit, it adds to your current CPP monthly income. If you are still working when you hit age 65, you may choose to contribute to CPP or not. There is never any harm in stopping CPP contributions after 65, other than your current CPP income will no longer grow.
If youre under age 65 and earning an income, you must contribute to CPP. Its only after age 65 that you can opt out of making CPP contributions.
