An occupational tax is a type of tax that is imposed on people or businesses based on their occupation or profession. This tax is a way for the government to collect revenue to fund public services and programs. Taxes can take many forms, including money or other types of contributions.
Occupational license taxes may be imposed as a percentage of gross earnings (payroll) on all persons working within the city or on gross receipts or net profits on all businesses within a city. A flat annual rate may also be used by cities, which is often referred to as a business license fee.
Any individual (resident or non-resident) or business entity (partnerships, corporations, or S-Corporations) who receive taxable compensation are required to file the Occupational License Return (OL-3) and pay the Occupational License Tax to the Louisville Metro Revenue Commission (LMRC).
Occupational License Tax Taxes collected on all net profits earned by a business within Louisville/Jefferson County. Anyone who engages in business, profession, occupation, or trade will have to pay the Occupational License Tax. There is no minimum earned net profit amount before you are liable to file a tax return.
The occupational tax is imposed upon the privilege of engaging in a business, profession, occupation, or trade within Louisville Metro, Kentucky, regardless of the legal residence of the person so engaged.
