An abnormal or out of range test result indicates that the baby may be at higher risk of having one or more of the disorders included on the newborn screening panel. This does not mean that the baby definitely has a disorder.
Some of the most common birth defects include, but arent limited to, the following: A cleft lip and/or cleft palate. Bone growth abnormalities that cause short stature, missing limbs or scoliosis. Congenital heart conditions.
They are contacted if a test was positive for a condition. A positive newborn screening test does not mean a child definitely has the medical condition. Doctors order more tests to confirm or rule out the diagnosis. Parents can talk to their childs doctor about the newborn screening results.
There are four possible results in newborn blood spot screening: Within Normal Limits/Negative, Trait, Borderline, and Positive/Abnormal. A Within Normal Limits or Negative result means that the screen was normal for the disorder and no additional follow-up is required.
If the newborn screen indicates out of range results, parents are contacted by their childs healthcare provider. It is important that parents follow their healthcare providers directions for their childs immediate care and additional testing.
