Individuals can apply for a marriage license in any county and get married in any county in South Carolina. The license is only valid if the ceremony takes place in South Carolina. The application does NOT expire. A blood test is NOT required.
A marriage license authorizes two people to get married to each other. In the U.S. a marriage license issued in one state only authorizes parties to get married within that state. A marriage ceremony in one state based only on a marriage license issued by some other state does NOT result in a legally valid marriage.
A South Carolina license can be used in any county in the state. The marriage may be conducted by a minister or anyone authorized to administer oaths. (Note: A South Carolina notary public is authorized to administer oaths in this State, and therefore authorized to administer a marriage ceremony).
While you may have heard it takes a certain number of years (seven is the most common belief), in South Carolina, you could be common law married after living together for less than a year if certain criteria were met.
You must have a marriage license: No blood test is required. Persons over the age of 18 may bring a drivers license or birth certificate. Persons under 18 must bring not only a certified copy of their birth certificate, but also a written, notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian.
