Michigan has two federal district courts, which are the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. Judges on these courts must be nominated by the U.S. President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan has Clerks Offices located in Bay City, Detroit and Flint. While Ann Arbor and Port Huron are places of holding court, there are no staffed Clerks Offices. Directions and site specific information is available at Locations, Hours, Holidays and Parking.
The Court is based in Detroit, with courthouses also located in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Flint, and Port Huron.
They handle most traffic violations, civil disputes seeking money damages up to $25,000, landlord-tenant disputes and criminal cases in which the defendant is charged with a misdemeanor that is punishable by not more than one-year imprisonment.
The Office of the Clerk (in both divisions) is open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on all days except Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. The Customer Service Information line (312) 408-5000 will be answered from 8:30 until 5:00.
