The pressure-enthalpy diagram (log P/h diagram) is a very useful tool for refrigerant technicians. First, an explanation of how the diagram is built up is given, and then its use is described. Figure 2.1 shows the principle of a log P/h diagram, and indicates the refrigerants various thermodynamic states.
Explanation: Vertical lines on the pressure enthalpy chart show constant total heat lines. In an enthalpy chart, Vertical lines represent constant enthalpy and horizontal lines will represent constant pressure. The constant enthalpy can be termed heat.
Pressure Temperature Chart - National Refrigerants, Inc.
An enthalpy diagram plots information about a chemical reaction such as the starting energy level, how much energy needs to be added to activate the reaction, and the ending energy. An enthalpy diagram is graphed with the enthalpy on the y-axis and the time, or reaction progress, on the x-axis.
A traditional PT chart would list the pressure next to the boiling point temperature. For blends, there are two values for the pressure/temperature rela- tionship one for the vapor and one for the liquid. Since saturated liquid will start to form bubbles when heat- ed, this is called the bubble point.

Traditional PT charts list the saturated refrigerant pressure, in psig, with a column for temperature down the left side. Single-component refrigerants and azeotropes boil and condense at one temperature for a given pressure.
The point at which the two curves meet is called the critical point. The importance of this point is that at any point above, no additional pressure will change the vapor into a liquid. A simplified pressure-enthalpy diagram is shown below, describing this information.
with a PT chart Service personnel will often want to know at what temperature the refrigerant is boiling or condensing inside the coil. Popular refrigerants, such as R-22 and R-404A, will have the temperature scale printed on the gauges and the coil temperature can be read directly.
