Form IT-370, also known as the Application for Automatic Six-Month Extension of Time to File for Individuals, is a New York (NY) State tax form used by individuals to request an extra six months to file their New York State income tax return.
To get this automatic extension, you must file a paper Form 4868 or use IRS e-file (electronic filing). The form must show your properly estimated tax liability based on the information available to you. You will not receive any notification from the IRS unless your extension request is denied.
More In Help. You may request up to an additional 6 months to file your U.S. individual income tax return. There are three ways to request an automatic extension of time to file your return. You must request the extension of time to file by the regular due date of your return to avoid the penalty for filing late.
File Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You can file by mail, online with an IRS e-filing partner or through a tax professional. Estimate how much tax you owe for the year on the extension form: Subtract the taxes you already paid for the filing year.
Use Form 4868 to apply for 6 more months (4 if out of the country (defined later under Taxpayers who are out of the country) and a U.S. citizen or resident) to file Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS.
