A tax abatement is a common economic development tool used to encourage new investment as well as increase or maintain basic employment in the community. In Kansas, there are two methods for obtaining tax abatements on real property: a constitutional tax abatement and the issuance of Industrial Revenue Bonds.
When referring to taxes, an abatement is a reduction in the amount owed. This is generally applied to taxes, penalties, fees, etc.
The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) may consider settlements of tax debts when there is doubt of collectability or doubt as to the validity of the debt. A petition for abatement (PFA) allows you to reduce your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe or when you dispute the amount of the debt.
Grounds for modifying abatement date. An employer may file a petition for modification of abatement date when such employer has made a good faith effort to comply with the abatement requirements of a citation, but such abatement has not been completed because of factors beyond the employers reasonable control.
