No. In fact, you should never leave the license plates on a vehicle when you sell it. Those plates are registered to you. Your name, your address, your plates, take them off the vehicle. Selling a vehicle in no way transfers the registration of the license plates.
The plates have to be removed before the vehicle transfers ownership. If you didnt remove the chances are they have not registered it and are actually driving on your plates which can make you responsible and that can lead to legal issues.
You may choose to use the license plate on other vehicles, return them to your county DMV(opens in new window) or recycle them with a recycling service that will take metal.
You must remove your license plates when you sell your vehicle (in Colorado, the plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle). The buyer can legally drive without plates (within 36 hours of the sale) to the local motor vehicle office or to their residence (if after-hours or on the weekend).
If a vehicle is sold or traded, license plates should be removed and a pro-rated amount of the fees, based on the time remaining be credited toward your new vehicle registration or the renewal of another vehicle registered in the same name, provided the registration is not expired at the time the credit is applied for.
