It was introduced to simplify and unify KYC procedures across financial institutions, enhancing efficiency reducing duplication. The Central Know Your Customer (CKYC) is a unified system in India that stores your KYC details centrally, allowing seamless sharing across banks, NBFCs, mutual funds, and insurers.
While CKYC is a mandatory verification procedure done by financial institutions to minimise illegal activities, you can open a new bank account without any KYC. The RBI has prohibited opening a Bank Account, Demat, or reading account without KYC since 2004.
The account type can be gauged from the nomenclature of CKYC identifier issued to the customer. For Normal Account, any of six officially valid documents (PAN, AADHAAR, Voter ID, Passport, Driving licence, NREGA Job Card) can be submitted for the ID of the customer.
Financial institutions regulated by SEBI, RBI, IRDAI, and PFRDA can register your KYC details with CKYC. When you open a bank account, Demat account, purchase an insurance, or invest in mutual funds, these financial institutions will register your KYC details with CKYC.
To get started, visit your bank or mutual fund office, submit your documents, and get your CKYC number. If you already have one, check it online using your PAN.
