A record suspension allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and demonstrated that they are law-abiding citizens for a prescribed number of years, to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records.
To apply for a record suspension, you must have completed all of your sentences, which includes: all fines, surcharges 1, costs, restitution and compensation orders 2 ; all sentences of imprisonment, conditional sentences, including parole and statutory release; any probation order(s).
A record suspension (formerly a pardon) allows people with a criminal record to have it set aside. This helps them access employment and educational opportunities and to reintegrate into society.
Eligibility criteria: After the expiration of any sentence including imprisonment, probation and the payment of any fine(s), the waiting period is: 10 years an offence prosecuted by indictment. 5 years an offence that is punishable on summary conviction.

There is always a possible loss of career opportunities that the presence of a criminal conviction has once employers run a background check. However, in March 2012, the Canadian government, through the Parole Board of Canada, changed the name of pardons and switched over to the term Record Suspension instead.
