You must submit a Michigan withholding exemption certificate (form MI-W4) to your employer on or before the date that employment begins. If you fail or refuse to submit this certificate, your employer must withhold tax from your compensation without allowance for any exemptions.
By placing a 0 on line 5, you are indicating that you want the most amount of tax taken out of your pay each pay period. If you wish to claim 1 for yourself instead, then less tax is taken out of your pay each pay period. 2. You can choose to have no taxes taken out of your tax and claim Exemption (see Example 2).
If 1 is claimed, less money is withheld from each paycheck as detailed below: Higher take-home pay per period. A smaller refund or possibly owing taxes at the end of the year. This option works best for those preferring having more money throughout the year instead of waiting for a refund.
If you are eligible to claim an exemption from withholding, you can use the W-4 form. You are only exempt from withholding if you owed no federal tax the prior year and you expect to owe no federal tax for the current year. To claim you are exempt, you write Exempt on the new W-4 form in the space below Step 4(c).
Claiming 1 on your tax return reduces withholdings with each paycheck, which means you make more money on a week-to-week basis. When you claim 0 allowances, the IRS withholds more money each paycheck but you get a larger tax return.
