TRIO is a set of federally funded college-opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. Low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities from sixth grade through college graduation are served nationally.
TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention. TRIO programs provide direct support services for students and relevant training for directors and staff.
TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs.
At least 2/3 of all TRIO students are both low- income and first- generation students. TRIO Helps Students Get to and Through College! TRIO programs make college more affordable by providing critical financial information and non- financial supports to First-Generation and Low-Income Students.
The goal of the TRiO Student Support Services Program is to assist students with their academic, professional, and personal goals. We aim to assist first-generation, low-income, and students with documented disabilities in their goal of transferring to a four-year university.
