Earlier, tax preparers were only supposed to sign their tax forms along with their social security numbers, leaving them vulnerable to privacy attacks. Starting from the year 2000, tax preparers were then given the option to use either their SSNs or PTINs.
Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2025 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a valid PTIN.
The penalty is $50 for each failure to comply with this statute and a maximum $25,000 for all documents filed during a calendar year, adjusted for inflation.
PTIN enrollment and upkeep: Attorneys and Certified Public Accountants do not need a PTIN unless they are compensated for preparing or assisting in preparing federal tax returns or claims for refund. A PTIN cannot be shared among multiple individuals or one office. Each individual must obtain his or her own PTIN.
