Use form IHT217 with form IHT205 (or C5 (2006) in Scotland) to claim a transfer of unused nil rate band if the estate is an excepted estate and the whole of the nil rate band is available to transfer.

For RNRB to apply, the home must be closely inherited. In general this means that the property must be inherited by a child of the deceased, or by a remoter lineal descendant of the deceased (e.g. the grandchild, great grandchild, or other child of a child of a child etc.).
Use the IHT402 with form IHT400 to transfer any unused nil rate band from the deceased spouse or civil partner to the deceaseds estate.
