If you were an Indiana resident during the tax year and had income from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin, you are covered by a reciprocal agreement. This agreement applies only to wages, salaries, tips and commissions. The income needs to be included on the Indiana return and tax paid to Indiana.
If the states have a reciprocal agreement, youll pay taxes to the state in which you live. If an agreement doesnt exist, youll need to file two tax returnsa resident return in one state and a nonresident return in the other.
For states with reciprocity agreements, workers only pay taxes in the state where they live, not the state where they perform the work. For example, a person who lives in Arizona but works in California wouldnt have to pay state taxes in California because the two states have a tax reciprocity agreement.
Form 1040 is used by U.S. taxpayers to file an annual income tax return. Form 1040-SR is available as an optional alternative to using Form 1040 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older.
