The MMSE is widely used because it is a quick 5 to 10-minute test that requires no special equipment or training for doctors or nurses. Comprising 30 questions, each worth one point, this test assesses memory, orientation, and math skills. The MMSE evaluates various aspects, including: Sense of date and time.
The top score for the MMSE is 30 a score of 25 or higher is said to be normal. You do not need to prepare or study for the MMSE.
The MMSE was developed as a method for grading cognitive impairment, and is used to follow up the course of a patients cognitive function over time. The MoCA, on the other hand, was developed to screen for mild cognitive impairment. To do so it tests a wider variety of cognitive functions than the MMSE does. The maximum MMSE score is 30 points. A score of 2024 suggests mild dementia, 1320 suggests moderate dementia, and less than 12 indicates severe dementia. On average, the MMSE score of a person with Alzheimers declines about two to four points each year.
