The ad valorem tax, also known as the property tax, comprises the primary source of revenue for each of the 82 counties within the state of Mississippi.
Rather, state law simply exempts the homeowner from ad valorem taxes for up to $7,500 in assessed value. In other words, a home with a true value of $75,000 or less would be exempt from all property taxes (municipal, school district, and county).
These exempt properties generally include property owned by nonprofit entities, religious organizations, and governments. Also, some states and local governments will give exemptions for certain groups. For example, if a homestead exemption exists, a property owner will not pay taxes on their primary home.
Persons who are 65 years of age and older or who are disabled, upon application and proof of eligibility, are exempt from all ad valorem taxes up to $7,500.00 of assessed value. The application for exemption must be filed with the individual county on or before April 1.
Section 27-31-101, et seq., the county board of supervisors and municipal authorities are authorized to grant exemptions from ad valorem taxation under certain circumstances.
