A safety data sheet (SDS), material safety data sheet (MSDS), or product safety data sheet (PSDS) is a document that lists information relating to occupational safety and health for the use of various substances and products.
Material Data Safety Sheets are a critical component of the United States OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, which states that anyone who might handle, work with or be exposed to hazardous materials must have access to the Material Safety Data Sheets.
The older MSDS formats could vary from source to source within a country depending on national requirements; however, the newer SDS format is internationally standardized.
MSDSs must be developed for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace, and must list the hazardous chemicals that are found in a product in quantities of 1% or greater, or 0.1% or greater if the chemical is a carcinogen. The MSDS does not have to list the amount that the hazardous chemical occurs in the product.
Electronic access and other alternatives to maintaining paper copies of the safety data sheets are permitted as long as no barriers to immediate employee access in each workplace are created by such options.
