Students of medicine will study these bodies in an anatomy laboratory course as well as surgical resident training. Bodies are also made available for research purposes in a variety of fields. On average the educational use is between 1-yr to 18-months.
Donation for study: after embalming the body is donated, usually to a medical institution, where it is dissected, and studied. Cadavers have also been used in experiments that would otherwise be fatal, such as Crash tests. The remains are usually eventually cremated.
When the long process of dissection is complete, the cadavers are cremated, with the remains returned to family, interred in a dedicated plot, scattered in a memorial garden or sometimes buried at sea.
At the time of death or immediately following a funeral, the deceaseds remains are received by the Anatomy Bequest Program and used for educational and research purposes. The donation lasts 2-18 months and the donors remains are either cremated or buried after the donation process.
Do I have to pay for anything during the donation process? FACES personnel will transport remains from a funeral home, coroners office, hospital, or hospice center anywhere in Louisiana at no cost.
