The screening test for Downs syndrome used at this stage of pregnancy is called the combined test. It involves a blood test and measuring the fluid at the back of the babys neck (nuchal translucency) with an ultrasound scan. This is sometimes called a nuchal translucency scan.
The Ontario Perinatal Record was created to standardize the documentation of perinatal care, not to be the standard of clinical care. Care providers need to follow national and local guidelines and individualize care to each situation.
Prenatal screening tests can find out whether your baby is more or less likely to have certain genetic conditions. Most often, these screening tests are offered during the first or second trimester of pregnancy. They include blood tests and ultrasound.
NIPT is publicly-funded if you meet one of the criteria, such as: Being age 40 or older at the time of birth. Having had a past pregnancy with trisomy 18, 21, or 13. Getting a screen positive result from another publicly-covered prenatal screening test.
This screen is paid for by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) from 11 weeks and 2 days to 13 weeks and 3 days of pregnancy. It involves a special ultrasound called the 11-14 week (nuchal translucency) ultrasound and a blood test and finds most pregnancies with trisomy 18 and 21, but not all.
