The annual National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) Public Data Release files are provided by the U.S. Fire Administrations (USFA) National Fire Data Center (NFDC).
The NFIRS is a reporting standard that fire departments use to uniformly report on the full range of their activities, from fire to emergency medical services (EMS) to equipment involved in the response. NFIRS is the nations largest, national, annual database of fire incident information.
A typical fire investigation report includes the incident date, alarm and arrival time, address, estimated losses, type of building, possible human factors (if any) for ignition and the presence of any detectors.
The NFIRS is the worlds largest, national, annual database of fire incident information. 22,695 fire departments reported to NFIRS in 2023. Over 33.1 million responses to all types of incidents were reported by participating fire departments, including nearly 1.3 million fire responses in 2023.
What information should be submitted to NFIRS for medical emergency incidents? To comply with HIPAA laws, only a Basic Module (and optional Personnel/Apparatus Modules) should be submitted but must not contain any personally identifiable information about the patient or their condition.

Policy/Action: Fire incident records are not open to the public because they may contain information protected under one or more of the exemptions defined in the FOIA (5 U.S.C. 552(b)).
The NFIRS Incident Type for a structure fire (a building fire) is 111. (One hundred and eleven.) Note: Code 111 excludes confined fires, e.g. chimney fires or contained cooking fires. If those confined fires extend into the structure, they are no longer confined, and are coded as a full building fire.
