Section 179 is a provision of the US tax code that allows businesses to deduct (write-off) the full purchase price of qualifying vehicles and equipment in the year of purchase, rather than depreciating them a little at a time over several years.
You can only deduct meals while away from your tax home overnight, or at least long enough to require a stop to sleep or rest. This means local drivers cant deduct food and drink costs, but long-distance drivers can. You have two options for deducting meals: the actual expense method or the per diem allowance.
While the IRS allows most industries to deduct 50% of meals, drivers subject to the Department of Transportations hours of service limits, can claim 80% of their actual meal expenses. The hours of service rule requires drivers who have driven a certain amount of hours to stop and rest for an assigned period of time.
If your vehicle weighs less than 14,000 pounds, you could receive a maximum first-year deduction of up to $30,500 for 2024 taxes, and up to $31,300 for 2025 taxes depending on what type of vehicle is placed in business service.
