You can have a refund of your contributions if: your total membership in the NHS Pension Scheme is less than 2 years. This 2 years includes any qualifying membership. (Qualifying membership is explained in booklet SDK).
In most cases you can take 25% of the money in cash, tax-free. Youll need to do this at the start and take the rest as income. You can get a guaranteed income for life either at the same time you draw your NHS pension scheme benefits, or at a later date.
To claim a refund, you must complete an RF12 form. If youre in active NHS employment, send this to your employer. If you have more than one NHS employer, you only need to submit one RF12 form. This must go to the most recent employer that the refund period relates to.

If you reach pensionable age and are still living overseas your NHS pension will either, be paid into your UK bank account in Sterling, or into your local bank account where you are living, where it would be paid in the currency of that country or territory the latter is possible in most cases.

If you leave the NHS scheme before completing two years of qualifying membership*, youre entitled to apply for a refund of the contributions youve made, rather than deferring or transferring your benefits. You can do this via the RF12 form, available from the NHS pensions hub.
If you were an active member between 31 March 2000 and 5 April 2006 you may take your pension from age 50. If you were not an active member between these dates then you cannot take your pension until age 55. You may apply for early retirement by contacting NHS Pensions directly.
Transferring benefits out of the NHS pension scheme You are able to transfer your benefits out of the NHS pension scheme. There are restrictions on the type of transfers available and time limits which apply. Benefits can generally be transferred out of the scheme at any time before your normal pension age.
