The Student Study Team is a partnership between the school and home that uses a problem- solving approach to help students be more successful in school. How does a student get referred to the SST? Usually teachers refer a student to the SST.
The SST includes the family, the students teachers, the school administrator, and in the middle and high school grades, the student. Others who may know the student or have expertise to address the area of concern, such as the school psychologist, resource teacher, or counselors may also be invited.
The purpose of the SST is to identify and intervene early in order to design a support system for students having difficulty in the general education classroom. Either a staff member or parent can make a referral for an SST.
The SST meeting provides everyone with an opportunity to share concerns and develop a plan. The interventions agreed upon will vary depending on the childs needs. The SST team may also try to determine if the child may be struggling due to a specific learning disability or other special need.
SSTs are school-based problem solving teams utilized to review lack of academic progress, behavioral concerns, attendance/truancy issues, parent and/or teacher concerns, and to recommend alternative strate- gies/interventions to be implemented in the regular classroom.
