This ABC is considered a direct observation format because you must be directly observing the behavior when it occurs.Observing Behavior Using A-B-C Data Antecedent- the events, action, or circumstances that occur before a behavior. Behavior- The behavior. Consequences- The action or response that follows the behavior.
How to Make ABC Data More Efficient create data sheets where you can just check or circle options. dont take data all day! Pick a few time periods throughout the day. (ie. from 9-9:30, 12- 12:45 and 1:30-2 and record during those times the next day do the opposite time periods) use staff to take data.
ABC narrative recording differs from continuous recording in that only target behaviors are observed and the events that occur before and after the behavior is recorded (Cooper et al, 2007, p. 508). However, the events observed may or may not be the determining factor of the behavior.
Use this form to identify situational factors related to the occurrence of a behavior problem. Each time a target behavior occurs, record the date, time, and your initials. Use check marks to identify target behavior, location, activity, and what happened immediately before and after the behavior.

Structured ABC recording enjoys the advantages of being faster and easier to record in the moment and being relatively less subjective.
Recording data in narrative form is time consuming and works well for observing one student. It may be difficult for the observer to track all student behavior in the classroom, especially in group work.
Taking ABC data is recommended when you are observing the reoccurrence of a maladaptive behavior that you would like to target for intervention. I recommend only taking data on one behavior at a time, so that you can determine the function of that specific behavior.
ABC data is collected by one or more staff members who frequently work or interact with the student. This type of data can be collected for as few as two or three days or as many as several weeks, depending on how often the student attends school and how often behaviours of concern are observed.
