A safety data sheet template is used to inform workers of the properties, hazards, and safe use of chemicals in an occupational setting. Chemical manufacturers can use this template to write and update safety data sheets, and workers can use it as a safety guide when handling hazardous chemicals.
The information contained in the SDS is largely the same as the MSDS, except now the SDSs are required to be presented in a consistent user-friendly, 16-section format.
Safety data sheets are created by the manufacturer and/or distributor of the hazardous chemical. SDSs are updated by the chemical manufacturer or distributor within three months of learning of "new or significant information" regarding the chemical's hazard potential.
The SDS includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical.

SDSs now have a standard 16-section format with signal words (Warning or Danger), universally standardized hazard and precautionary statements, and hazard pictograms. Hazard pictograms are now red and white symbols or a Red Square tilted 45° on a point Pictogram.
SDS is similar to MSDS, the difference is that it is presented in a standardized, user-friendly, 16 section format. The other difference is that SDS adheres to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
Steps to writing an SDS Review OSHA requirements (29 CFR 1910.1200; Guidance for Hazard Determination) ... Use OSHA short form or ANSI format. ... Review Sigma or other manufacturer's SDSs for similar products. Use established Risk and Safety Statements (see Sigma printout). Include TSCA R&D exemption wording.
Go on the website of the manufacturer of the product. Once you are on the manufacturer's website, see if they have a section where they make their MSDSs/SDSs available to the public. You can then search through their MSDSs/SDSs and locate the one for your product.
Once you've got all your SDS obtained, OSHA recommends that you organize the pages alphabetically by product name. We've heard from some clients that they don't like to do this because they want to group all the types of products together instead. But OSHA strongly recommends that it be alphabetical.
