OSHA defines at 29 CFR 1910.134(b) a filtering facepiece respirator (dust mask) as a negative pressure particulate respirator with a filter as an integral part of the facepiece or with the entire facepiece composed of the filtering medium (as mentioned in your incoming letter) (see 63 Fed. Reg.
Examine the face piece of the disposable respirator to determine if it has structural integrity. Discard if there are nicks, abrasions, cuts, or creases in seal area or if the filter material is physically damaged or soiled. Check the respirator straps to be sure they are not cut or otherwise damaged.
Inspect equipment designated for emergency use at least monthly, and before and after each use. Replace all ed, torn, broken, missing, or worn parts (or replace the respirator entirely if it cannot be repaired). Any respirator that needs repair should be identified as out of service (such as with a tag).
During a negative pressure user seal check, the respirator user inhales sharply while blocking the paths for air to enter the facepiece. A successful check is when the facepiece collapses slightly under the negative pressure that is created with this procedure. A user seal check is sometimes referred to as a fit check.
