TurboTax will automatically fill out Form 8889 if you: Contributed to an HSA. Carried over a prior-year excess contribution. Took a distribution.
Are HSA contributions tax deductible? In short, contributions to an HSA made by you or your employer may be claimed as tax deductions, even if you dont itemize deductions on a Schedule A (Form 1040). Additionally, contributions made by your employer may be tax-free and excluded from your gross income.
You must always file a Form 8889 in any year you or an employer contributes money to your HSA or you make withdrawals from the account. The deduction you calculate on Form 8889 is taken on the first page of your income tax return.
If you hold an HSA account (or are the beneficiary of a deceased HSA holder), youre required to attach Form 8889 to your Form 1040 when filing your personal income tax or information return. If you fail to do so, youll be unable to deduct your HSA contributions.
Other relevant forms include Form 8889 for HSA reporting on your tax return and IRS Form 5329 for excess contributions. Not reporting contributions or distributions for your HSA can result in penalties and interest, affect taxable income calculations, require amended returns, and increase the risk of an IRS audit.

As I mentioned, your W-2 box 12 code W shows the amount that you and your employer contributed to your HSA. When you enter your W-2, TurboTax automatically records this amount in the 1099-SA, HSA, MSA section. Dont enter that amount again in the Medical section in the Deductions and Credits section on your return.
