What is Informational Text? Informational text is nonfiction writing, written with the intention of informing the reader about a specific topic. It is typically found in magazines, science or history books, autobiographies and instruction manuals.
Begin reading the informational text together. Model thinking aloud as they are learning and pointing out things that were written on the chart. It doesnt take long before the students are doing the same along with you and really paying attention; listening for what they knew or wanted to know.
You could also use the 3-2-1 structure to help students identify main ideas from supporting information. For example, you could ask students to record three of the most important ideas from the lesson or text, two supporting details for each of these ideas, and one question they have about each of these ideas.
One way to combat this is to have them write a summary sentence next to each paragraph as they read and to write a summary sentence of each section and chapter. The summary should say what the main idea of that paragraph, section, or chapter is. This will help students learn how to find important information in a text.
