There are different types of reflexes, including a stretch reflex, Golgi tendon reflex, crossed extensor reflex, and a withdrawal reflex. A stretch reflex is a rapid monosynaptic response of muscle to maintain posture and equilibrium. A Golgi tendon reflex triggers a muscle to relax in order to avoid injury.
In our discussion we will examine four major reflexes that are integrated within the spinal cord: the stretch reflex, the Golgi tendon reflex, the withdrawal reflex and the crossed extensor reflex.
A few examples of reflex action are: When light acts as a stimulus, the pupil of the eye changes in size. Sudden jerky withdrawal of hand or leg when pricked by a pin. Coughing or sneezing, because of irritants in the nasal passages. Knees in response to a blow or someone stamping the leg.
There are five components of a reflex arc which, together, form a reflex loop: Sensory receptor. Sensory neuron. Integration center. Motor neuron. Effector target.
Use a reflex hammer in a quick striking motion by the wrist on various tendons to produce an involuntary response. Before classifying a reflex as absent or weak, the test should be repeated after the patient is encouraged to relax because voluntary tensing of the muscles can prevent an involuntary reflexive action.
