The best way might be to create a folder for each one (either on your computer or in your file cabinet) and include old photos of them, their families, homes, and cemetery markers, plus their important documents, letters, and memorabilia.
Start with what you know. Collect data on your parents, grandparents and great grandparents in as much detail as possible. See what documentation people in your family have, mementoes like postcards and photographs may have names and addresses.
Gedcom is the universal format for genealogical data. It is independent of all software apps, although almost all will import and/or export in gedcom format (compliance with the standards does vary, however).
Any actual documents -- census records, birth certificates, death certificates, etc. -- go in one stack. The pedigree charts and family group sheets go in a second stack. Anything left over (which should mostly be your own miscellaneous notes) goes into the third stack. Well start with that one.
Talk to your relatives. Start with the oldest ones first. Be sure to take written notes or record your interviews. Ask family members for permission to see certificates and make a record of family birth, marriage, death, and burial records (known as vital records) in your free Pedigree chart and Family Group Sheet.
