hand sanitizer, also called hand antiseptic, handrub, or hand rub, agent applied to the hands for the purpose of removing common pathogens (disease-causing organisms). Hand sanitizers typically come in foam, gel, or liquid form.
Hand rub. A hand rub is a gel or liquid containing antimicrobial agents that decrease the number of microorganisms present on hands. The antimicrobial agents in most hand rubs are alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol, and n-propanol), available in varying concentrations.
If you can see dirt on your hands, it is important to wash them with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, then use of an alcohol hand rub is better than nothing at all. However, in the absence of any visible dirt or grease, hand rubs are as effective as washing with soap and water.
Antiseptic handrub is defined as applying a waterless antiseptic agent (i.e., an antiseptic agent such as alcohol that does not require the use of exogenous water) to the hands. The FDA classifies ethanol, 60 to 95% formulations, as a Category I agent.
