To write numbers in standard form, we follow a simple process. We identify the number between 1 and 10 and then determine how many times we need to multiply it by 10 to get the original number. Lets take the number 5,000 as an example. We can write it in standard form as 5 x 10^3.
Writing Small and Large Numbers A simple rule for using numbers in writing is that small numbers ranging from one to ten (or one to nine, depending on the style guide) should generally be spelled out. Larger numbers (i.e., above ten) are written as numerals.
The Chicago Manual of Style recommends spelling out the numbers zero through one hundred and using figures thereafterexcept for whole numbers used in combination with hundred, thousand, hundred thousand, million, billion, and beyond (e.g., two hundred; twenty-eight thousand; three hundred thousand; one million).
Numbers can be written either as words (e.g., one hundred) or numerals (e.g., 100). In this article we follow the guidelines of APA Style, one of the most common style guides used in academic writing. In general, words should be used for numbers from zero through nine, and numerals should be used from 10 onwards.
If one writes or represents a standard number in words, the form is called the word form. This is the same as when we tell a number to others. For example, 399 is stated as three hundred ninety-nine. 586,256 in the word form is five hundred eighty-six thousand, two hundred fifty-six.

Whole numbers and ordered events less than 10 should be written as words, not numerals (see examples), although there are some exceptions. Numbers with two or more digits should be written as numerals unless they are at the start of a sentence (see examples). Numbers between 1000 and 9999 should contain no punctuation.
