Family group conferencing (FGC) is a process that brings families together to make decisions or resolve disagreements. In child welfare, FGC aims to enable families to develop effective service plans that safeguard children and promote their welfare.
Empowerment - through the affirmation of the family, that they are the primary decision makers. Participation - the priority of participation of children, young people and all family members. Impartiality - both in terms of the process and the role of the Co-ordinators.
Purpose of Family Group Meetings The purpose of FGMs is to provide family-based responses to a childs protection and care needs. They also ensure an inclusive process for planning and making decisions about a childs wellbeing and protection and care needs (Child Protection Act 1999, section 51G).
The Promoting Safe and Stable Families (PSSF) Program is a Federal program aimed at preventing child maltreatment, enabling children to remain safely with their families, and ensuring permanency for children in foster care.
