If you lived inside the City of Detroit for the entire tax year in question (January 1st through December 31st), you should file as a resident of the City of Detroit.
The communities with a standard 1% income tax for residents include: Albion, Battle Creek, Big Rapids, Flint, Grayling, Hamtramck, Hudson, Ionia, Jackson, Lansing, Lapeer, Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Pontiac, Port Huron, Portland, Springfield, Walker and Benton Harbor.
You must file a Michigan Individual Income Tax Return if your Michigan income exceeds your prorated exemption allowance. Note: For the 2022 tax year, each Michigan personal and dependent exemption allowance is $5,000 plus $2,900 for each eligible special exemption.
Income of Detroit residents is subject to Detroit tax, regardless of where they were when it was earned. Non-residents of Detroit who worked remotely outside Detroit do not owe this tax.
City residents should file a city return if you filed a federal return even if you do not owe city tax to avoid correspondence from the Michigan Department of Treasury or your city.
