Noninvasive blood pressure principles. Page 1. Introduction. Oscillometry has become the preferred method for automated noninvasive blood pressure (NBP) monitoring in most clinical settings. It is increasingly used as an alternative to the invasive blood pressure measurement.
Noninvasive Blood Pressure Monitoring (NIBPM) refers to the techniques and devices used to measure blood pressure without penetrating the skin or entering the vascular system.
In healthy individuals there is good agreement between both direct and indirect measurements. Direct, invasive blood pressure monitoring is more accurate during states of low flow and significant vasoconstriction. Normal systolic blood pressure using indirect measurement at the coccygeal artery is 80 to 144 mm Hg.
Normal blood pressure varies with age, state of health and clinical situation. At birth, a typical blood pressure is 80/50 mmHg. It rises steadily throughout childhood, so that in a young adult it might be 120/80 mmHg.
