Zip files are not text. They are just binary.
Yes, binary code is hard to learn because it is not an efficient way of coding. It uses a base-two numbering system comprising only 1s and 0s. While it is possible to learn binary code, you can easily accomplish the same tasks and communicate with modern computers using any other programming language.
In general, executable -- or ready-to-run -- programs are identified as binary files and given a filename extension such as . bin or .exe.
Binary files typically contain bytes that are intended to be interpreted as something other than text characters. Compiled computer programs are typical examples; indeed, compiled applications are sometimes referred to, particularly by programmers, as binaries.
When it comes to USA zip codes, they are always 5 digits long. However, sometimes these codes may also include leading zeros. If you store these zip codes as integers, any leading zeros would be stripped, resulting in missing data. As such, its usually better to store zip codes as 5 character strings.
The general rule of thumb is if you can view the file in a text editor like notepad (ie. .html, . js, . css files etc) you should upload in ASCII mode, most others (including images, sound files, video, zip files, executables etc) should be uploaded in Binary.
All files are binary because computers express information as sequences of 0s or 1s. Therefore, a compressed file is also binary. You can run a hexdump program from the command line to see what the binary contents of any file are (in base 16).
The Zone of Interstate Postage (originally Zone Improvement Plan) more commonly known as a ZIP Code, in a system established in 1963 to geographically divide the country into small section as a way to speed up mail delivery.
